Labradorite



What it Labradorite?

Labradorite is a feldspar mineral it has a Mohs Hardness of 6-6.5 so its quite a strong stone but does fracture. It has a labradorescence which where it gets its name. Most specimens have a pearly sheen and some carry a schiller effect. The crystals are often found in tabular and thin shapes in a range of colors from grey blue to purple, yellow, green and brown. The charm of the mineral may not be fully noticed and could be completely overlooked if not viewed from the proper positioning and lighting.

Viewed from most angles Labradorite is generally a dull, dark grey to grey-green looking mineral until the colorful schiller is observed transforming the surface of the stone.



History of Labradorite

Labradorite has a rich history of conveying courage and mysticism, it is named for where it was found in Labrador; a Canadian province on the Isle of Paul. Inuits referred to is as a "fire stone" and there's records of its use in powdered forms to help cure ailments. According to legend, a warrior saw the Northern Lights trapped in the rocks and struck them with his spear to free the lights. This is probably because of the bright, color shifting patterns. Labradorite is not only found in Canada however; it can also be found in Mexico, Russia and Finland. Since its discovery, labradorite has been a commonly used and highly sought after stone for jewelry. Other than that, labradorite has been used in the production of road construction, glass and ceramic manufacturing.
